Between her boisterous sons and a house full of Poodles, there's never a dull moment for Melanie Travis. But no matter how hectic life gets, she can always pick up the scent of a howling good mystery--and she'll stop at nothing to dig up the truth. . .
It's summer in Connecticut, and Melanie's life has become an endless string of dog shows, soccer camp, and the antics of her energetic toddler. She hardly has time to pay much attention to her Aunt Peg's new protégé, Nick Walden, a self-proclaimed "dog whisperer" with an uncanny gift for decoding dog-speak. The well-heeled dog owners of Fairfield County are lapping up his alleged talents, anxious to discover exactly what their pampered pets are thinking--that is until the pooches start spilling their secrets.
When Nick is discovered dead in his home, his sister Claire enlists Melanie to help track down the killer. Now, as she juggles the demands of marriage and motherhood--not to mention her six beloved Poodles--Melanie can scarcely even begin to nose through the growing list of suspects. But just when she thinks she's barking up the wrong tree, she'll find herself face to face with a purebred murderer. . .

The intricacies of championship dog showing and the complexities of murder intertwine in Berenson’s entertaining 17th Melanie Travis mystery (after 2013’s Gone with the Woof). Amiable, handsome, and talented dog whisperer Nick Walden is gunned down in his home, possibly by someone he knows. His sister Claire enlists dog-loving amateur sleuth Melanie to help find Nick’s killer. The long list of suspects includes Nick’s clients; his snobby girlfriend, Diana Lee; and Melanie’s own Aunt Peg. Melanie uses her keen investigative instincts to sniff out clues in her lovely town in Connecticut’s Fairfield County, all while balancing two children, six standard poodles, and marital problems. Melanie’s engaging narration, with its slightly sarcastic flair, makes her utterly relatable. Fans will roll over with joy, and new cozy readers will likely scoop up the rest of the series. Agent: Meg Ruley, Jane Rotrosen Agency. -

The seventeenth in this popular canine mystery series finds Melanie balancing life with six poodles, two sons, a husband, and an ex-husband who needs her help. Bob asks her and her Aunt Peg to help dog whisperer Nick Walden find more clients. Soon after this happens, Nick is found murdered. Melanie talks to several of Nick's clients, but humans and dogs alike loved him. But soon she discovers some family secrets and a disgruntled girlfriend. Human and canine characters remain reasonably realistic and provide plenty of humor. Berenson cleverly weaves in interesting details about different breeds and showmanship. Fans of Miranda James' Cat in the Stacks series may also enjoy Berenson.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2014, American Library Association.)
