At the end of winter, a girl named Spring awakes from her slumber in the snow.

She travels through the forest and finds a little bird that has fallen from a tree.

The bird is so cold and weak that Spring can hardly hear its heartbeat, so she turns it into a rabbit with thick, soft fur so it will be warm.

To show their gratitude, birds gather eggs which Rabbit collects in a beautiful basket. Spring tells Rabbit to give them to the children so that they will know Spring is here.
This beautiful tale shows young children how the Easter Bunny came to be.

With a folktale-like spin on Easter traditions and vibrant, naïf-style paintings, McAllister and Corr offer up an Easter Bunny origin story in this seasonal picture book. When the sun touches Spring—personified as a light-skinned woman with flowing blonde hair—awakening her after a winter slumber, she brings life to everything she touches, including a cold, weak bird, which she transforms into a strong brown rabbit. As thanks to Spring for saving his life, Rabbit and his avian woodland friends—including “the blackbird, the nightingale, and the little wren”—offer her a clutch of eggs, which Rabbit places into a handmade basket. Explaining that she must keep her hands free to make things grow, Spring suggests that Rabbit instead distribute the eggs in a nearby village, heralding the changing season to residents of various skin tones. Gouache art bursting with flowers and light distinguish this volume that’s as much equinox fable as Easter tale. Ages 4–7.

PreS-Gr 3-Vibrant yellow sunshine whisks away the cold white snow. In its place, verdant greens sweep across the page as Spring, a pale-skinned young woman with green eyes, awakens from her winter slumber. Upon awakening, Spring discovers an injured bird. To rescue the bird, Spring transforms it into an animal better able to warm itself in the cold-a fluffy rabbit. The story goes on to depict the thankful bird community gathering eggs, and the rabbit weaving a basket for presenting the eggs to Spring. In modern folktale style, the Easter Bunny is born. The colorful eggs are delivered to children of many skin tones in a nearby village, where a lively celebration follows. Illustrated in Corr's bold signature style using gouache on paper, The Spring Rabbit presents a spirited nonreligious origin story for the childhood mascot of Easter that may resonate well during the spring season. VERDICT A secondary purchase for libraries looking to expand their spring and Easter collections, or where modern folktales are popular.-Jessica Caron
